Industry calls for ITU to develop ICT energy-efficiency metrics
Operators and manufacturers including ADNet Telecom, China Mobile, Fastweb, Huawei, KPN, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone have called for ITU to develop a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to assess the energy efficiency of networks and networking equipment, and software networks, applications and service platforms.
Industry players’ call for KPIs comes in parallel with a request that ITU develop an international standard detailing principles for ‘eco-design engineering’ of ICT infrastructure, and that ITU launch studies on ICT energy efficiency in the 5G context.
The call for energy-efficiency KPIs and standards was the main outcome of an ITU Forum on ICT Energy Efficiency hosted by Huawei in Madrid, Spain, 11-12 May.
The forum explored the energy-efficiency challenges resulting from the unceasing growth of video and data traffic, evolutions in network architecture and the growing complexity of network operations, administration and management.
The recommendations issued by the forum will be considered by the October 2016 meeting of the ITU standardization expert group for ‘ICTs, the environment and climate change’, ITU-T Study Group 5.
